Painting from life is essential to any artist who also paints in the studio from photographs. It is the only way to gain the knowledge needed to work successfully from photographs. |

Often my plein air studies will make their way into some large studio landscapes. The challenge is to make the large pieces as fresh the studies. But in the studio one can more freely design, exaggerate, and eliminate non-essential elements than when trying to capture the scene on location. Photos can also be useful, but I try to guard against letting the photo become my truth.

This collection is both traditional figurative painting and my more recent paintings of contemporary life. |

I went through a period of several years where I concentrated on still life paintings. I had many talented teachers, but I consider my time spent in the studio alone with inantimate objects my most valuable period of learning. In these years, with just myself and the objects in front of me, I learned drawing, composition and color. |
|

|
The paintings in this collections are impressionistic renderings in oil of figures on the beach.
|
|
|
|
I enjoy painting portraits of all types, from children to board chairmen. I work in either pastel or oil and have been painting commissioned portraits for 25 years.
